Guidebook: Orford Castle

PHOTO MISSING

Orford Castle was built by Henry II in the 12th century to protect himself against foreign invasion and uprisings by the barons of East Anglia, particularly the powerful Hugh Bigod, who owned Framlingham Castle. Designed as a visible symbol of royal power, it was both an innovative military stronghold and a grand residence, with comfortable rooms and a sophisticated layout. Its construction encouraged the development of a new church, streetplan and improved port of Orford itself.
