Guidebook: Deal Castle

PHOTO MISSING

Deal Castle was one of a chain of coastal artillery forts built by Henry VIII to protect England against the threat of invasion by Spain and France. Along with Walmer and Sandown Castles, it was designed to defend an important anchorage off the Kent coast known as 'the Downs'. Its flower-like shape, with cylindrical bastions, gave it a very wide field of fire.
