Carlisle Castle has seen 800 years of continuous military use. Frequently raided by the Scots, the castle commanded the western end of the Anglo-Scottish border in the low-lying land surrounding the Solway. Often the scene of turbulent conflict, the castle was besieged on many occasions and was even held by the Scots for several years.
