Gb St Augustines Abbey
St Augustine's Abbey was founded in 598 following St Augustine's successful mission to Kent to begin the conversion of the English to Christianity. King Ethelbert, the first convert, gave Augustine a site to build a monastery for the monks who had accompanied him from Italy. This guidebook traces, in words and pictures, the intriguing development of the Abbey site which was altered and extended under successive abbots and totally rebuilt after the Norman Conquest.
